The Delhi Government has directed the CPA (Central Procurement Agency) to procure 4 lakh contraceptives for sex workers residing in red light areas. The condoms will be made available for distribution at its Ajmeri Gate dispensary, per the orders of health minister, Satyendra Jain, and the Delhi Commission for Women.
This move comes after the concern for lack of contraceptive supply at GB Road, where about 5000 men and women are at risk of contracting HIV, and many have already fallen victim to the virus.
If implemented, this will be a huge step in the protection of sex workers and those at risk of HIV. The procurement, availability, and distribution will take a while. But we can applaud the government for this bold move.
